How to fish in summer? Learn these 4 common "tips" and doubling your catch will be a breeze.

Summer is rainy and hot, often with low pressure weather, making it a difficult season for fishing. From the perspective of fish behavior, summer can be divided into two stages: the beginning of summer, the minor fullness, and the grain in ear. These three solar terms are the peak fishing season.

During this stage, the temperature is not too high, and it is the breeding season for various fish species. The summer solstice, minor heat, and major heat mark the second stage, where the real high temperatures make fishing more challenging. The fishing conditions in summer are relatively poor, and the fishing methods tend to be more singular.

So, how can we fish in summer to achieve "double the catch"? As an experienced angler with 10 years of fishing experience, I would like to share some fishing tips: as long as you learn these 4 common "tricks", achieving "double the catch" is not a problem! I suggest fishing enthusiasts keep these tips in mind!

How should we fish in summer? Learn these 4 common "tricks", and achieving "double the catch" is not a problem.

1. Fish early, not late.

Grasping a good time is very important for fishing, and this is true for other seasons as well, but in summer, the timing for fishing needs to be more precise. When we say to fish early and not late in summer, it doesn't mean you can only fish in the morning and not at night; it means anglers should be diligent and get up early.

The best time for fishing in summer is from dawn until 9 AM, and from 6 PM to 11 PM. It is very difficult to catch fish during noon, except in some special weather conditions. If you sleep until 8 AM and then go fishing, you will only catch the tail end, and most likely come back empty-handed.

2. Fish away from the edges of aquatic plants.

The saying "fishing without fishing near the grass is like running around blindly" is popular in the fishing community, meaning that fishing should be done near the grass because fish hide below. However, this saying varies by season; for example, fishing near grass is good in winter, as fish hide in grassy areas when it's cold, and in spring, fish will also look for grassy places to spawn.

But once summer arrives, it’s different. Very few fish will hide in aquatic plants because of the hot weather. For instance, in winter, we feel warm under a blanket, but in summer, it would be too hot to cover up; fish feel the same way.

3. Use fragrant bait, not smelly bait.

In summer fishing, besides applying some techniques, the choice of bait is also crucial. Many people overlook this aspect, thinking that any bait will catch fish. However, being able to catch fish and catching fish easily are two different concepts, just like both cabbage and meat can be eaten, but which one tastes better?

In summer, small fish can be very aggressive, so avoid using brightly colored smelly bait, as this will attract small fish. Instead, use lightly fragrant bait, primarily in white or gray colors. Brightly colored smelly bait will be snatched up by small fish, leaving no chance for larger fish.

4. Target specific fish.

Choosing which target fish to catch is key to influencing your catch. Different weather conditions and times of day will affect the foraging behavior of different fish species. Bottom-dwelling fish tend to be low in oxygen and sensitive to high temperatures, while mid-to-top water fish can tolerate high temperatures but are sensitive to low oxygen levels. In fact, during the hot summer, mid-to-top water fish are generally easier to catch.

You can fish for larger bottom-dwelling fish in the early morning and late evening, and try float fishing as the temperature rises, targeting fish like silver carp, grass carp, and whitebait. Most anglers will choose to use long rods with corn kernels while also using short rods to catch small fish. If the weather conditions are really poor and the small fish are not biting, then the chances of catching larger fish will also be very low.

If other fish are hard to catch, you can try fishing for yellow catfish. Yellow catfish can feed normally at water temperatures of 36 degrees Celsius and can survive out of water for 2 to 3 hours as long as their bodies remain moist. They are a species that can tolerate high temperatures and low oxygen levels, and they can still feed normally when other fish cannot.

In the hot summer, we anglers have a love-hate relationship with fishing; we love that all fish are willing to bite, but we hate the heat. However, this does not deter us anglers; if we can't fish during the day, we can fish at night!

As the name suggests, night fishing means fishing at night. You can either buy a big light to illuminate the area or use a glow-in-the-dark ticket. Night fishing is not as hot and is very quiet, plus you might encounter larger fish.

Fishing Techniques: Characteristics of Various Fish and Classic Fishing Methods, A Must-Read for Anglers

Different species of fish have significant variations in their habits, which leads to different fishing methods. The period from late spring to early summer, when temperatures are neither too high nor too low, is an ideal time for fishing. From a behavioral perspective, larger fish tend to feed more and for longer periods during this time, as they are about to enter their breeding season. Therefore, there is a saying in folk culture that during the Grain Rain period, fish are lively, and one should be cautious with hooks and lines, indicating that the time for catching crucian carp has passed, and it is now time to fish for larger species. Understanding the habits of fish can lead to more effective fishing.

How to choose a fishing rod based on different environmental conditions

What kind of fishing rod is suitable for fishing in lakes and reservoirs, or open water? It is common to see anglers using 8-meter or 9-meter long rods for fishing in lakes and reservoirs. However, casting and reeling with a long rod for extended periods can be very tiring. Does a long rod necessarily have advantages over a short rod? Not necessarily. The choice of fishing rod also depends on the requirements for fishing in lakes and reservoirs. In this article, we will share insights with anglers on whether to use a long rod or a short rod.

A person, a fishing rod: this is a fisherman.

Every fisherman has his own reasons for loving to fish. Taking a fishing rod and sitting by the water is a true enjoyment! Fishermen, have you ever felt restless after a few days without fishing, or felt unbearable when you couldn't get your hands on a rod you had your eye on?

Correct operations and standard fishing methods.

Fishing rods are expensive fishing gear, and anglers must protect their rods as a warrior cherishes their weapon. Most accidental damage to fishing rods is caused by improper use by the angler. Correct operation and standardized fishing methods can extend the lifespan of the fishing rod.

How to Store and Maintain Fishing Rods

In winter, fishing is no longer done, so fishing rods need to be properly maintained to extend their lifespan. If a carbon fishing rod is not in use, it is best to store it in its original box. After placing it in the original box, do not leave it in a regular room; instead, keep it in a dry storage room where the temperature is consistently maintained between 20 to 25°C and the humidity does not exceed 60%. For fishing rods without the original box, first place them in a cloth rod cover, and then put the rod in a rod bag. The rod box and rod bag should be stored upright in the storage room, not laid flat, to avoid compression and deformation.

How to choose the action of a fishing rod

The action of a fishing rod refers to its stiffness or softness. When a fishing rod bears weight, it will inevitably bend. A stiff rod bends less, while a soft rod bends more. Stiff rods have less elasticity compared to soft rods, and their ability to absorb and dissipate energy is lower. Therefore, they require relatively thicker fishing lines, allowing the fish to be pulled out of the water in a shorter time. To put it colloquially, there is a certain degree of forceful pulling involved.
